Mar 26, 2017 The Image Capture application is one of the best kept secrets of macOS. It allows users to import photos and scans from a variety of different sources without the need for drivers. Mac users can find this handy little utility in their Applications folder. There are many applications for macOS that allow scanning of images or text. Most of them are however complex, slow or not really suited for scanning documents or letters. PDFScanner has been created with one simple task in mind: Scanning and archiving documents as quick and easy as possible, and making them findable with Spotlight search. Dec 28, 2014 Format – The default is PDF, but you can change it to an image format instead if you are scanning pictures. You can also use the “Combine into single document” checkbox to take everything off the sheet feeder and put it into a single document. In the Image Capture app on your Mac, select your scanner in the Devices or Shared list. If you don’t see your scanner in the list, see Set up a scanner. Scan your images. If you have a scanner with an automatic document feeder or flatbed scanner, see Scan images or documents.
I use an Epson XP-355 printer/scanner, which I operate as a scanner through Image Capture. This worked absolutely fine until recently, so I suspect it's an issue with the latest OS update (I'm on 10.13.2).
I can scan an image, the image saves fine, but my screen completely freezes up – I can't quit, can't force quit, can't operate the dock, click on the finder etc. The only thing moving is my cursor but it can't click on anything. The only way to get out of it is to hold down the power button and force the whole machine to switch off, which is not ideal.
(No issues with printing, but there doesn't appear to be a forum category for Image Capture or Scanning that I've been able to find).

Assuming your print drivers supplied the correct info, IC should show the 'scanner' in its left panel Select than an the main panel should display a group of functions available for that device. On my setup, the Brother printer has a flatbed and document feed. The setting comes up with he document feed selected and changing it doesn't seem to 'stick' between uses. I may remove the plist and let it re-build it.
Below that item, I have other options ('Kind:' Text, Black & White and Color). Again, the default is text, not what I usually use. Oh well...
There should be other items below this, Resolution, Scan size, Orientation, Duplex, etc. Obviously, your printer may or may not have some of these and maybe even have more. 😉
Finally, the main question you have, 'Where will these things go?' 🙂 I have a 'Scan To:' pop up list that specifies three default folders and three default (Apple) apps. But there is also the ubiquitous 'Other...' that should allow you to pick another destination, including another app—Entourage, hopefully. Whether Entourage will acknowledge and accept the image is another matter. I have absolutely no experience with that app. It may also help to define the image Format. The default is tiff, which suits me fine, but it will be much higher resolution and file size than what you'd want for an email. jpeg will probably be the most useful in that case.
